Overview
DoorLoop offers tenant self-service activation, letting tenants securely access or activate their portal using a QR code or shareable link, without relying on individual invitation emails or manual follow-ups.
Tenant portal access has traditionally depended on property managers sending email or SMS invitations. This approach can introduce issues:
Tenant contact information isn't always accurate
Invitation links expire or go unopened
Property managers have to resend invites manually
Support is frequently contacted to troubleshoot access
Self-service activation gives tenants a reliable way to activate their portal on their own, even when contact information needs to be confirmed.
What this includes:
A DoorLoop-generated QR code and shareable link
Persistent access that property managers can share anytime
A guided, secure verification flow for tenants
Automatic portal activation when verification is successful
This eliminates the need for manual approval or invitation resends.
The Steps
Get Your QR Code and Shareable Link
Click Settings on the main menu. Then under the Property Settings section, click Tenant Portal.
Under Permissions, toggle on "Allow tenants to access the tenant portal with QR code."
From either the Permissions section or the Portal Invites section, you can Copy QR Link, Download QR Code, or Print QR Code.
See Customize Tenant Portal Settings for the full settings walkthrough, including property- and lease-level overrides.
After getting the QR code, share it with your tenants — place it around your properties, send it in emails, display it on your company website, or use any other means where tenants can see and scan it. This saves you the trouble of sending individual tenant portal invites.
How the Activation Process Works (Step by Step)
Tenant opens the activation link or QR code — The tenant scans the QR code or clicks the link provided by their property manager, starting the secure activation process.
Tenant provides email or phone number — To confirm the right person is accessing the portal, tenants provide their phone and/or email address. If there's a match, they move to Step 4. If not, they continue to Step 3.
Tenant confirms lease details — If the tenant can't be matched by phone or email, they're asked to enter basic lease information:
Property name or address
Unit number
Name on the lease
Monthly rent (with a small tolerance)
Move-in date
This step also confirms there's an active lease and prevents unauthorized access.
Secure contact verification (OTP) — Once the lease is validated, the tenant verifies their identity using a one-time passcode (OTP) sent to their email or phone.
If contact information already exists, DoorLoop uses it.
If not, the tenant can securely provide one.
Placeholder or fake emails are automatically ignored.
Portal access or activation —
If the tenant portal is already active, the tenant goes directly to the login screen.
If not, the tenant completes a quick setup (password or SSO), and the portal activates instantly.
From there, the tenant is taken straight into their portal.
Security
This flow is designed to protect both property managers and tenants:
Identity is verified before access is granted.
One-time passcodes prevent impersonation.
No manual approvals or overrides that could introduce risk.
Once activated, only the verified contact can be used to sign in.
If anything doesn't match or verification fails, access is blocked automatically.
