Find Out Why a Tenant's Payment was Reversed and Charged a Return Payment Fee

Understand why a tenant's ACH payment was reversed in DoorLoop — common return codes, automatic fee charges, and how DoorLoop handles the accounting.

Overview

There are many reasons why ACH payments might fail, but the most common reason is insufficient funds. This will cause the payment to fail processing. When your tenant has a reversed ACH payment, DoorLoop will handle all the necessary accounting. DoorLoop also automatically adds the appropriate returned payment fees as charges to your tenant's lease for them to pay with their next successful payment.

The Steps

How do you review reversed payments?

You can review reversed payments and how they affect your deposits by clicking Reports on the main menu. Then under the Accounting section, click the Deposit Transactions report. Here, you can click on each deposit, and it will show exactly what made up that deposit, including reversed payments and reverse payment fees.

How do I find out why a payment was reversed?

If you want to see the reason why your tenant's payment was reversed, under the Who Owes You section, click the Reversed Payment report. You can then filter by ePay only to see only online reversed payments and take out reversed payments you recorded manually.

In the Memo column of this report, you will see the reason for the return as reported by our payment processor.

You can also view the reversed payment on the tenant's lease ledger when reviewing the payment.

If you need to add a returned payment fee manually, see Charge a Returned Payment Fee for Returned or Bounced Payments. For a broader explanation of how returned payments work, see Introduction to Returned Payment Fees for Reversed Payments.
