Credit or Unapplied Payment Appearing on a Lease

A credit or unapplied payment appears on a lease when a tenant overpays or when a payment is received before a charge is posted. The credit will apply once a charge is posted.

A credit or unapplied payment appears on a lease when:

  • A tenant pays more than the balance due (overpayment), or

  • A payment is received before a charge is posted

The credit will remain until a charge is posted and the payment is applied to it.

How to Handle It

  • Post a charge first before receiving a payment.

  • Accept the overpayment as prepaid rent and apply it to next month's charge.

  • Wait until the next charge is posted — the credit will apply automatically.

  • Do nothing — the credit will remain until it is applied.
