Troubleshoot Plaid Bank Connection Errors in DoorLoop

Fix common Plaid bank connection errors in DoorLoop, including re-authentication, invalid credentials, duplicate accounts, sync issues, and missing transaction history.

Written by Samuel

Overview

Plaid is the third-party service DoorLoop uses to securely link your bank accounts. When a connection fails, the fix usually depends on whether the issue is on your bank's side, Plaid's side, or DoorLoop's side — this article helps you tell the difference.

This article covers the most common Plaid connection errors DoorLoop users encounter, what causes each one, and exactly what to do. If you've tried the relevant fix and the issue persists, the When to Escalate to DoorLoop Support section at the bottom tells you what information to gather before reaching out.

"Re-Authenticate Required" or "Login Required" Error

This is the most common Plaid error, and it means your bank login has changed or expired — Plaid can no longer access your account until you sign in again.

This typically happens when:

  • You recently changed your bank password

  • Your bank requires a new multi-factor authentication (MFA) prompt

  • Your bank pushed updated terms and conditions you haven't accepted

  • The connection has been idle for an extended period

To fix it:

  1. Go to Accounting > Transactions in DoorLoop.

  2. Locate the account showing the re-authentication warning and click the 3-dots on the right side. Select Repair Connection (or Reconnect) from the popup menu.

  3. Sign in to your bank again through the Plaid pop-up and complete any MFA prompts your bank requires.

  4. Once Plaid confirms the connection, return to DoorLoop and refresh the page.

  5. During the Plaid setup flow, ensure all accounts from the selected bank are included to avoid missing connections.

Note: If you see this error repeatedly on the same account within a short period, your bank may be requiring you to log in directly to their website first to clear a notification or accept new terms before Plaid can reconnect.

"Invalid Credentials" Error

Plaid is telling you the username or password it received didn't match what your bank has on file. A common variant is "Username Incorrect," which occurs when the username entered in Plaid doesn't match the original, including capitalization.

Before contacting support, check the following:

  1. Confirm you're selecting the exact correct institution in the Plaid search — many banks have multiple listings (e.g., personal vs. business, or regional variants). Choosing the wrong one is the #1 cause of this error.

  2. Re-type your password manually instead of pasting it (extra spaces, copied formatting, or autofill errors are common).

  3. Log in directly to your bank's website in a separate tab to confirm your credentials still work there.

  4. If your bank recently required a password reset, complete that on your bank's site first, then retry the Plaid connection.

  5. If you encounter the error message "Please verify information and attempt again," confirm your credentials directly on your bank's website and update your password if necessary.

Tip: If your password contains special characters, try logging in to your bank in a browser first to confirm it accepts them — some bank logins reject characters that Plaid passes through correctly.

"Already Connected" or Duplicate Account Error

This means Plaid sees that the bank account you're trying to add is already linked to your DoorLoop instance — even if it doesn't appear in your visible account list. This commonly happens when you already have one account connected at a bank and are now trying to connect additional accounts from that same bank.

To resolve:

  1. Go to Accounting > Transactions and check both Active and Inactive accounts.

  2. If you find the account already listed but inactive, reactivate it instead of adding it. See Make an Inactive Bank Account Active Again.

  3. If the account is no longer needed, deactivate the existing connection first, then add the new one. See Make a Bank Account Inactive.

  4. If you're trying to connect an additional account from a bank you already have one account connected to, click the 3-dots menu next to your existing connected account for that bank and select Repair Connection. Go through the Plaid setup flow again and select all your bank accounts at that bank, regardless of whether you're adding them to DoorLoop right now. Once finished, click Import Transactions, and the account you were trying to connect should now appear on the list.

  5. If repairing the connection doesn't work, you can also try to disconnect the bank account and reconnect it.

Tip: To avoid this in the future, select all your accounts at a bank the first time you connect it — even ones you don't plan to add to DoorLoop right away. This way, you won't need to repair the connection later when you're ready to add more.

Note: DoorLoop doesn't allow full deletion of bank accounts — only deactivation. This is intentional to preserve your transaction history.

"Too Many Attempts" Error

This error comes from your bank — not from Plaid or DoorLoop. After several failed login attempts, most banks temporarily lock the account from third-party access for security reasons.

To resolve:

  1. Wait at least 15–30 minutes before trying again — most banks auto-clear the lockout in this window.

  2. Log in directly to your bank's website to confirm your account isn't locked at the bank level.

  3. If you're locked out at the bank level, complete your bank's account-recovery process before retrying in DoorLoop.

Important: Don't repeatedly click Reconnect during a lockout — this can extend the lockout period or trigger a longer security hold from your bank.

Connection Works but Transactions Aren't Updating

The connection itself is healthy, but new transactions aren't appearing in DoorLoop.

Check the following:

  1. Confirm the most recent transaction posted at your bank — Plaid only pulls posted (not pending) transactions, and it can take 24–48 hours for new transactions to flow through.

  2. Go to Accounting > Transactions, then click the Bank Transactions tab. Next to the bank that isn't updating, click the 3-dots and click Refresh.

  3. If transactions still don't appear after 48 hours, repair the connection (see "Re-Authenticate Required" above) — sometimes Plaid's sync silently stalls, and a re-auth restarts it.

Note: If old transactions reappear unexpectedly, that's a separate, expected Plaid behavior. See Why Old Transactions Reappear in DoorLoop (and How to Exclude Them) When Using Plaid.

Why Are Older Transactions Missing After Connecting My Bank?

When you connect your bank account through Plaid, DoorLoop uses your Accounting Start Date to determine how far back to import transactions. If that date is set too recently, any transactions before it simply won't be pulled in — even if your bank has that history available. This is also the most common cause of an unexpected gap in your transaction history, or a bank feed that appears to start on a random date.

To fix it:

  1. Go to Accounting > Transactions.

  2. On the bank that needs its accounting start date adjusted, click the 3-dots on the right and select Edit.

  3. Go to the Opening Balances section and review the Accounting Start Date.

  4. Adjust it to the correct date if needed.

Once updated, DoorLoop uses the new date as the starting point for importing transactions.

Note: If this bank account already has past reconciliation data, you'll need to delete all past reconciliations before updating your opening balance and accounting start date.

How far back can Plaid pull my transaction history? This depends on your bank — each financial institution sets its own limit on how much history it shares through Plaid, ranging from a few months to a couple of years. If your Accounting Start Date looks correct and transactions are still missing, contact your bank directly to confirm how far back their Plaid connection supports.

Specific Bank Won't Connect

Some banks have known compatibility issues with Plaid that are outside DoorLoop's control. The most common cases we see:

  • TD Bank — Periodic Plaid connectivity issues; check Plaid's status page before retrying.

  • American Express — Limited support for business accounts via Plaid, and older MFA methods can prevent Plaid from downloading transaction data. Disabling MFA may help maintain a stable connection.

  • Horizon Bank, Bank of Marin — Known intermittent Plaid availability.

  • Smaller regional credit unions — May not be supported by Plaid at all.

To check whether your specific bank is having a known issue:

  1. Visit the official Plaid status page at status.plaid.com to see system-level outages.

  2. In the Plaid Link pop-up, look for any banner or warning shown when you select your institution — Plaid often displays a known-issue notice directly on the bank's tile.

If your bank isn't supported by Plaid: You can still record transactions in DoorLoop manually, or use the manual import option to upload a transaction file (.CSV or .QFX) exported from your bank.

Preventative Measures and Best Practices

  • Always ensure your bank credentials are up-to-date and match the information used in Plaid.

  • Regularly check for updates or changes in your bank's login requirements.

  • If you don't initiate outgoing payments through DoorLoop, updating Plaid-connected accounts isn't necessary for incoming payments like rent or dues.

When to Escalate to DoorLoop Support

Contact DoorLoop support when:

  • You've tried the relevant fix above and the error persists for more than 24 hours

  • You see an error code that isn't listed in this article

  • The Plaid status page shows your bank is healthy but you still can't connect

  • You're seeing the same error across multiple unrelated bank accounts (this often indicates an issue on the DoorLoop or Plaid side rather than your bank)

When you contact us, please include:

  • The exact error message (a screenshot is ideal)

  • The bank name and the institution variant you selected in Plaid

  • The approximate time you encountered the error

  • Whether you can log in successfully on your bank's website

Tip: Issues that originate at your bank (locked accounts, password resets, terms-of-service prompts) must be resolved at the bank directly — DoorLoop and Plaid cannot fix these on your behalf.
