Overview
While you can make rent payments with a credit card or bank account (ACH), you can also now make payments with your Chime or CashApp account. This is because both these apps provide a unique account and routing number that mimic that of a traditional financial institution. That means you can make payments using the ACH option on your tenant portal and enjoy lower service fees in the process.
The Steps
Paying with Chime
When you open a Chime account, this gives you access to a free Chime checking account (More info here). What this means is that you are also given a Bank Account and Routing Number that you can use in your tenant portal to set up an ACH payment.
How to find your Chime Checking Account and Routing Number
Log in to your Chime Account via the Chime mobile app or at chime.com.
Go to the Move Money section of your Chime Account and select Direct Deposit.
The name of bank that provides banking services for your Chime Checking Account, along with the Routing Number and Checking Account Number will be visible on the Direct Deposit screen.
Setup your payment in your tenant portal
With your Account Number and Routing Number in hand, you can now go through the process of adding and verifying your checking account on your tenant portal and start making payments. I suggest reading the full article on How to Make a Payment on the Tenant Portal which is a step-by-step guide on how to set this up.
On your tenant portal homepage, you can click either the Make a Payment (One-time payments) or the Setup Auto-Pay (Recurring Auto-payments) button.
Enter your payment details and click Next.
You can now choose the payment method. You'll be choosing Bank Account (ACH).
There are two ways you can enter your bank account information.
(Method 1 - Instant) Enter your email, full name, and then search for your bank. Once you find your bank account, click it. You will need to log into your online banking portal to verify your account with Stripe. Note that if you are having issues connecting to your bank portal, you should try method 2 and manually verify your bank account.
(Method 2 - Manual Verification) You can alternatively click "Enter bank details manually instead" to enter your bank's routing number and account number. You will need to verify your bank account by confirming small deposits in your account (this can take 1-2 days). Note that you can not proceed through the payment process until you complete the verification process.
Click Save.
Once you verify your bank account, you can continue with the payment process by using the Make a Payment button again.
Paying with CashApp
When you create a Cash App account, you are assigned a unique Cash App routing number that is linked to your account. This routing number is associated with the bank that supports your Cash App transactions. What this means is that you are also given a Bank Account and Routing Number that you can use in your tenant portal to set up an ACH payment.
Locating your Cash App routing number and account number
Launch the Cash App on your mobile device.
Tap on the profile icon located in the upper-left corner of the screen.
Scroll down and select the "Cash" option.
Under the "Funds" section, you will find your Cash App balance. Tap on it.
On the next screen, scroll down and select the "Direct Deposit" option.
Here, you will see your Cash App routing number, along with other essential details such as your account number.
